Winter reflections from Pure Joy

Johanna

The darker days of December bring with them a time of reflection.  Our gardens are finished producing and are enjoying a time of rest. Our thoughts turn to gratitude…for the miracle of growth and the gifts that each plant brings.  It was a good year.

This year’s Pure Joy gift pack features the herbs that were the most prolific in our 2018 garden.

St. John’s Wort

Soothing & healing

St. John’s Wort is like discovering a ray of earth-bound sunshine. Many herbalists turn to St John’s wort to soothe and ease pain.  Studies indicate it is specifically indicated for trauma and damage to the nervous system whether through injury or viral infection, neuralgia, sciatica, Bell’s palsy, head and spine trauma, pinched nerves, after surgical and dental work, as well as injuries to any area that is rich in nerve endings.

Michael Moore explains that St. John’s wort benefits the skin in wound repair“as it stimulates granulation and capillary regeneration, as well as having substantial antibacterial effects” (Moore, 1993). The fresh oil is used by herbalists as a vulnerary and anti-inflammatory that helps to hasten healing and soothe the pain of burns, cuts, wounds, insect bites, and even varicosities such as hemorrhoids and varicose veins as well as bruises, strains, and muscle pain (McIntyre, 1996; Winston, 2007).

Our St. John’s Wort patch was so healthy this year, we decided to include St. John’s Wort salve in our Pure Joy holiday gift pack for the first time. These little yellow flowers produce a ruby-red oil, which makes a beautiful scarlet coloured salve.

Sea Buckthorn

Clarifying & rejuvenating

Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil is rich in Vitamins A, C and E and Omega 7, as well as carotenoids, all of which are vital in the defense against free radical damage. This is because they stimulate and encourage collagen cell production, these cells form the very building blocks of our skin and are essential in protecting it from damaging free radicals which can weaken collagen, causing premature ageing and loss of firmness.

Sea buckthorn’s anti-oxidant properties also lend themselves to clarifying the complexion, as they not only protect the skin from free radical damage but strengthen it from within, helping to prevent the development of fine, lines, wrinkles and age spots.  Speaking of age spots…many of our customers have given us amazing testimonials about our cream and oil reducing and eliminating brown spots, keratosis, moles, and even basal skin cancer.

Our annual Sea Buckthorn festival attracted many pickers and samplers.  We enjoyed trying Sea buckthorn berries, jam, juice, tea and, of course, our international award winning cream. This cream, scented with rose geranium, can be found in our Pure Joy gift pack this year.

Calendula

Calming & moisturizing

Calendula, or English Marigold, is our signature flower at Pure Joy. The flower is used to promote new tissue growth in wounds, and is effective in healing cracked lips, dry skin, and diaper rash. Our 2018 gift pack contains our three signature calendula products: a moisturizing calendula face cream, a healing calendula salve, and our perennially popular calendula peppermint lipbalm.

The coming spring will bring some changes as we move herbs from Joy’s herb garden into our main gardens.  Henry has plans to reconstruct the barn that he dismantled in Belleville in 2017.  It will encroach on the herb garden.  Moving it around will also provide an opportunity for us to sort out and control some of the invasive species.  The most exciting change the spring will bring is the birth of a tiny herbalist who, no doubt in time, will become very familiar with and knowledgeable about the herbs and plants at Fifth Wind. In the meantime, we wish you a happy and safe holiday season.
